This course provides students with an in-depth introduction to the woodshop at 3rd Ward. Students will leave the course with a familiarity with all the woodworking power and hand tools the shop is equipped with and will gain practical knowledge needed to work on their own projects or continue with the 3rd Ward shop curriculum.

During the class, students will make two pre-defined projects: a mallet and an end table. These projects are designed to use the full array of tools, giving students an in-depth an introduction. All project materials will be ordered by 3rd Ward and are included in the cost of the class. While the projects are set in design and scale, students are welcome to embellish or alter the design as they see fit.

This course is required for Furniture Design and other advanced shop courses. In addition to class time, students receive a three-day shop pass for use between class meetings. It is expected that students will utilize this time in order to finish course projects.

Students will be taken through a process whereby they determine the aesthetic value of an object and its arrangement about other objects. This arrangement of objects in space – a collage – will then lead to a discussion of its effectiveness as an assemblage, as well as its success in communicating the message or intent of its creator[s].

Students will leave this class having engaged the basic language and practice of sculpture, and experimented with core construction techniques. Personal group discussions, rather than critiques, will hold a large part of this surprisingly therapeutic creative process.

Much like the construction of a Tibetan Sand Mandala or Erwin Wurm’s one minute sculptures, focus will be placed on the lastingness of the work’s ideas and not its actual physical existence. Works will be deconstructed or removed from the space at the end of class.

A focus on found materials will cater to the three-dimensional collage we will be creating. Students are encouraged to come with their own materials and tools if they have ideas in mind. If you have bigger materials you'd like to bring, we ask you just give us a call before hand.

The equipment fee for this class will cover the cost of a small array of tools and supplies needed for generally assembly.

In this two day intensive course students will be introduce to the basic procedures ands concepts of rubber and plaster mold making. Each student will get hands on experience planning and executing a rubber block, two piece plaster and rubber brush on molds. As part of these processes students will also learn about the myriad mold making and casting materials, such as urethane, thickeners, accelerators, etc.

The molds that taught in this class are fairly simple, not requiring any specialized equipment, so the student will easily be able to take these methods and apply them to their art or craft projects. With a little space - and care being clean - students could easily setup these processes in their home studio.

Students are encouraged to bring any small (orange size or smaller) and simple objects that they would like to take a mold of. It is the goal of this class that each student will leave with not only three finished molds, but a also thorough understanding of basic molding principle that they can apply to their own projects.

Designed as a multi-level course for students familiar with the woodshop, during the six week duration students will design and build a piece of furniture – from sketches and rough lumber to a finished piece. Class time will be spent on advanced tool and technique demonstration, design discussion and critiques, and individual instruction.

Perfect for students wanting to experience furniture-making from beginning to end, topics covered will be: selecting and ordering lumber, designing for stability and aesthetics, basic hand-joinery, and wood finishing.

Students are expected to come to the first class with drawings, models, or other specific plans for a piece of furniture they would like to make. Please consider time and skill level when selecting a project. Complicated projects like chairs will be discouraged, though the final decision is up to the individual student.

Students are required to order, purchase, and be available to receive their own lumber. Most students spend between $200-400 on lumber; this varies by project and the type of wood ordered. Though the focus of the course is on woodworking, students are also welcome to augment their projects with other materials such as metal, plastic, concrete, electronics, etc.

In addition to class time, students receive a 5-day shop pass for use between class meetings. Students should allow for time outside of class in order to finish their projects.

In this class students will be creating inflatable sculptures of monumental scale. The sculptures will have the ability to range from 5 feet to 25 feet. The colossal forms will be created in plastic construction sheeting or of any other found or recycled plastic. This class will offer clay modeling, found object, pattern making, and sewing techniques.

The lack of space is a major concern in New York City and this class will easily solve that problem. To have the ability to create an inflatable work of art has many advantages; space is the first incentive. The sculptures can be created in your living room or even at the kitchen table. Also, the sculptures will be able to deflate and fit in a small box, which provides the possibility to show large scale works all around the world. Lastly, there are no limitations to what you can create, the sculpture can be as big, bright, figurative, architectural, or abstract as you like. This is an entertaining project that will gain a great deal of attention from a wide variety of people.

Patrick Flibotte received his M.F.A. in sculpture from The University of Georgia in 2005. Since then, he has been teaching sculpture full time at The University of Miami. Patrick has shown his work at the Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta, The Tampa Museum of Art, The World Arts Building, and The Dorsch Gallery in Miami. His recent work, artists statement, and resume can be seen at www.patrickflibotte.com.

After an introductory discussion of different instruments (traditional and not), students will begin to build immediately. Both projects are predefined, with all required materials included in the cost of the course. Students are welcome to alter, embellish, and otherwise modify their project to suit their particular needs and aesthetic. This can include different finishes, custom electronics, custom hardware: you name it.

This course is a 9 hour intensive which will make each student proficient at the use of all the tools in the metal shop. Students will leave having learned the basics and safety procedures for MIG welding and plasma cutting, as well as the ins and outs of the other tools in the shop. We guarantee at the end of this three week course, you will feel like more of a bad ass.

We will cover introductory metal fabrication techniques as well as tool maintenance. We'll go over MIG welding basics like wire speeds and amperage settings (not to mention proper attire), as well as Plasma torch setup and use. From there we'll move to the drill press, how to safely clamp your work down, and how to set the proper spindle speeds. We'll talk about the band saw, and correct blade feed and speed settings and then finally cover all the odds and ends of hand tools: cut off wheels, grinders, files, layout instruments, etc.

The focus of this course will be the safety of your work environment, and hands on experience with each of tools. Students will leave the class feeling comfortable working in the metal shop on their own small projects. Students are welcome to come to class with project ideas, but should expect all class time to be spent on practical uses of the machines.

This class comes with a 3 day shop pass.
