You can learn volumes about a person by looking at their possessions, how they carry themselves, and by what they choose to wear. A photographer should consider all of these things when making an environmental portrait. In this class, students will be challenged to make a series of imaginative and intimate portraits, while juggling all the technical issues of photographing the subject in a larger context. We will discuss techniques in making your subject feel at ease, as well as lighting, composition, form and symbolism. This is a critique course with an emphasis on aesthetic and conceptual issues, though technical matters will be discussed as needed. The final class will be a portfolio review.
Students should have a solid working knowledge of their cameras and equipment, though technical help will be available. This class will benefit students who need a little motivation to shoot, and those who want to begin to delve into conceptual issues regarding portraiture. Students can feel free to use digital or analog cameras, but must be able to bring in work every week.
