Woodworking tips on cutting, assembly, and critical thinking in the shop environment, as well as basic joinery.

From the Theremin to the Uber Organ, the Moog to the Cat Piano, inventiveness and necessity have lead artists and musicians to build sound-making devices. During this class we will look at and listen to a wide variety of musical instruments including historical, experimental, one-off, and the just weird. You will then design and build your own instrument/device/sculpture/machine that is both functional and beautiful. If the task of building your own instrument from square one is too daunting, plans for simple instruments (like thumb pianos, etc) will be provided to get you started.

This course is ideal for the musician looking to expand their sonic capabilities, the artist interested in adding sound elements to their work. Among the categories discussed will be horns, organs, percussion, bells, stringed instruments, and those defying classification. The emphasis of this class will be on experimentation and craft within an atmosphere of technical and conceptual support with most class time spent in one-on-one instruction based on individual projects. Students will have full access to 3rd Ward's extensive wood and metal facilities, as well as assistance with these and other processes (such as casting, basic electronics, circuit-bending) as needed.

In addition to regular course time, a tour of the Steinway piano factory will be scheduled on a weekday which will be available free of charge to students.

Woodshop workshop, or related experience, is a (strongly) suggested prerequisite for this class.

This 4 session 3 hour class is designed to give students of all levels the ability to breathe new life into old furniture by teaching the secrets of professional furniture refinishers. Bring in the small to medium sized piece of furniture of your choice and learn to safely use chemical strippers to get rid of that lilac paint you thought was so cool in 8th grade, repair techniques to fix that Eames chair you broke skateboarding in the living room as well as how to choose and hand apply the right finish for your project to preserve it until the very very very end of time.

From broken chair legs to your ex's initials carved in a tabletop if it needs fixing you'll be able to do it.

New York is a veritable treasure trove of found objects begging to have new starts in the loft of some kind soul with heart and skill. While the neighbors waste the entire day chasing down the Zipcar and shouting at the traffic on their way to the Ikea, you can be learning the lost arts of old masters and creating heirlooms for your great grandchildren.

No previous knowledge of woodworking or finishing is required.

In this six class, project-based welding class for artists, students will be introduced to MIG welding, oxy-acetylene welding and plasma cutting as well as other types of fabrication and finishing techniques, including spraying.

Beginning with a technical lecture and demonstration and followed by guided hands-on practice the group will discuss the different industrial and conceptual properties of metals commonly used in sculpture and fabrication and work together on project ideas to be completed over the course of the next three sessions. Projects should be designed for mild (carbon) steel, as that will be the focus of the class. Bring your ideas and sketches to the first class for discussion and planning.

For the remainder of the course, students will work on their individual projects through one-on-one guided practice with the instructor. During this time technical knowledge will be reinforced through direct application and practice, so by the end of the class students will have not only achieved a new level of confidence with various forms of welding but also have finished project of their own design. In addition to concept, planning and construction, this class will also be covering a few key finishing procedures, including painting or spraying your finished work to add color.

The class will include a 5-day shop pass for use in our facilities outside of class time during the course of the workshop. In order to finish your piece by the last day of class, you are encouraged to use your shop pass. The acquisition of materials and consumables (grinding disks, drill bits, etc.) are the responsibility of the students. Costs for materials will vary for each student depending on the needs of their individual project. Information about where to find scrap metal or how to order new metal will be provided during the first class.

Students are required to come to all classes dressed appropriately for welding; this includes heavy cotton pants (jeans are fine), leather boots, and a long sleeve shirt of cotton or wool. All clothing and footwear with polyester, nylon, or other synthetic fibers is to be avoided (the fibers will melt if heated and will stick to your skin). Please also remember to bring your own leatherwork gloves and eye protection.
