This one day intensive workshop will take you through the basics of lighting for film and video: three point lighting, color temperature, focus, intensity and motivation. We will discuss what setups are best for different types of projects and camera angles. You will learn what equipment is available to light different situations from interviews to dramatic scenes. You will learn how to build your own lighting instruments, and also discover various resources around the city to buy / rent professional lighting equipment.

We will discuss basic lighting safety. It is vital to take electricity seriously as it is dangerous when not respected. This class is designed to make you feel safe and comfortable when approaching electrical systems in all shooting environments. The basics of using a multi-meter to check continuity and amperage will be discussed.

We will light some scenes using only lights that we made ourselves with things that are available for sale at neighborhood hardware stores. The class will learn how to make a china ball, how to build a dimmer, how to create a “ring of fire” in a room with limited outlets, the do’s and don’ts of clamp lights and much more.

Please bring a pair of wire cutters and some heat resistant gloves to the class.
