This 4 session 3 hour class is designed to give students of all levels the ability to breathe new life into old furniture by teaching the secrets of professional furniture refinishers. Bring in
the small to medium sized piece of furniture of your choice and learn to safely use chemical strippers to get rid of that lilac paint you thought was so cool in 8th grade, repair techniques to fix that Eames chair you broke skateboarding in the living room as well as how to choose and hand apply the right finish for your project to preserve it until the very very very end of time.
From broken chair legs to your ex's initials carved in a tabletop if it needs fixing you'll be able to do it.
New York is a veritable treasure trove of found objects begging to have new starts in the loft of some kind soul with heart and skill. While the neighbors waste the entire day chasing down the Zipcar and shouting at the traffic on their way to the Ikea, you can be learning the lost arts of old masters and creating heirlooms for your great grandchildren.
No previous knowledge of woodworking or finishing is required.
Adam Rizer is the owner of Cuyhoga Furniture Co. He is a certified member of the International Guild of Furniture Restorers.

This course is a 9 hour intensive which will make each student proficient at the use of all the tools in the metal shop. Students will leave having learned the basics and safety procedures for MIG welding and plasma cutting, as well as the ins and outs of the other tools in the shop. We guarantee at the end of this three week course, you will feel like more of a bad ass.
We will cover introductory metal fabrication techniques as well as tool maintenance. We'll go over MIG welding basics like wire speeds and amperage settings (not to mention proper attire), as well as Plasma torch setup and use. From there we'll move to the drill press, how to safely clamp your work down, and how to set the proper spindle speeds. We'll talk about the band saw, and correct blade feed and speed settings and then finally cover all the odds and ends of hand tools: cut off wheels, grinders, files, layout instruments, etc.
The focus of this course will be the safety of your work environment, and hands on experience with each of tools. Students will leave the class feeling comfortable working in the metal shop on their own small projects. Students are welcome to come to class with project ideas, but should expect all class time to be spent on practical uses of the machines.

In three class meetings, students will leave armed with the experience and skills to begin incorporating intermediate to advanced joinery techniques in their woodworking and design projects. This class is intended for students who have a working knowledge of tools in the woodshop, and who are looking to take their furniture design and woodworking prowess to the next level. The awesome level.
We will discuss the fibrous nature of wood, which is directly responsible for joinery existence. We will discuss the various uses of joinery - from functional to aesthetic and back again - and the reasons why one might use one type of joint instead of another (for reasons other than "this one is more complicated"). There will be a show and tell of various joints and the method of their construction. This will include notes on sharpening - including how to sharpen and how to know when its time to sharpen your tools. We'll also touch on the difference between different types of edge tools.
Students will get first hand experience with hand-cut and machine-cut joints, including mortises-and-tenons, dovetails, box joints, dado and biscuit joints.
Students are more than welcome to come to class with project ideas in mind, but should expect a majority of class time to be spent on the technical details of the art of joinery. This class comes with a 3 day shop pass for use in the 3rd Ward Woodshop, students should expect to use each day during the course of the class, as practice makes perfect.
