This workshop will cover shop safety and limited yet key woodworking methods. The procedures taught will give you the skill set necessary to use the wood shop safely and it will introduce you to woodworking practices. The following will be demonstrated: tool operation (from the table saw to the joiner), appropriate techniques for cutting and joining, and tool setup and maintenance. Woodworking tips on cutting, assembly, and critical thinking in the shop environment, as well as basic joinery.
Each section of this class is identical, we are merely offering two because of the Workshop's growing popularity. Class price pays for enrollment in 1 of the 2 class sections. Be sure to let us know which!

Lighting is the most imporant part of your habitat: it illuminates your work, might keep you from sleeping and of course, sets the mood. In this class, students will learn the basics of building well designed, natural and energy-efficient eco friendly lighting. Using bamboo, LEDs and other materials, students have the option of constructing and leaving with one of the instructors designs, or of creating their own original light sculpture to bring home and put on the night stand.
The instructor will guide students from conception through construction, including building simple electronic circuits. Emphasis will be put on craftsmanship and attention to detail. Students can feel confident they will leave with a real, functional work of art.
While some prior light woodworking experience is good, it is not necessary. Students should come to class with a 5v, low amperage power adapter (around 550 mA). These can be bought at Radio Shack, or found along Canal St. Most cell phone chargers work fine.
Daniel Rossi is an artist living and working Brooklyn, NY. His work can be seen at http://www.organiclightsculptures.com.

In this class students will design and build furniture with an emphasis on woodworking techniques and the design process. However, students are welcome to incorporate materials other than wood into their projects such as salvaged material, metal, plastic, concrete, etc.
In addition to tutorials in woodworking tools and techniques, students will receive individual attention during the design and construction phases. An emphasis will be placed on technique; students should leave this class with a wide-ranging set of woodworking skills that can apply to furniture, sculpture, and many other fields.
Students are responsible for all materials and some consumable supplies (drill bits, sand paper, etc.). Costs for materials depend on the necessities for the individual project. Information about local wood suppliers will be shared, and making a group order is possible. A 5-day shop pass will be given to each student for work outside of class. Please dress appropriately. Students must bring a pair of safety goggles to class.
The Woodshop Workshop is prerequisite for this course. It will familiarize students with safety in the shop and it will serve as an introduction to working with wood. The workshop is offered the Sunday before the first furniture design class. Enrollment is necessary to register for Furniture Design Class.

In this four class, twelve-hour project-based welding class for artists,
students will be introduced to MIG welding, oxy-acetylene welding and plasma
cutting as well as other types of fabrication techniques.
Beginning with a technical lecture and demonstration and followed by guided
hands-on practice the group will discuss the different industrial and conceptual
properties of metals commonly used in sculpture and fabrication and work together
on project ideas to be completed over the course of the next three sessions.
Projects should be designed for mild (carbon) steel, as that will be the focus of
the class. Bring your ideas and sketches to the first class for discussion and
planning."
For the remainder of the course, students will work on their approved individual projects through one-on-one guided practice with the instructor. During this time technical knowledge will be reinforced through direct application and practice, so by the end of the fourth session students will have not only achieved a new level of confidence with various forms of welding but also have finished project a of their own design.
The class will include a 4-day shop pass for use in our facilities outside of class time during the course of the workshop. In order to finish your piece by the last day of class, you are encouraged to use your shop pass. The acquisition of materials and consumables (grinding disks, drill bits, etc.) are the responsibility of the students. Costs for materials will vary for each student depending on the needs of their individual project. Information about where to find scrap metal or how to order new metal will be provided during the first class.
Students are required to come to all classes dressed appropriately for welding; this includes heavy cotton pants (jeans are fine), leather boots, and a long sleeve shirt of cotton or wool. All clothing and footwear with polyester, nylon, or other synthetic fibers is to be avoided (the fibers will melt if heated and will stick to your skin). Please also remember to bring your own leatherwork gloves and eye protection.
