The Business of Illustration as a Career introduces students to the dynamic behind the illustration field and how to be a successful freelancer in it: from delivering a client's message and exploiting different markets, to self-promotion, contracts and licensing.
The goal of this course is to train students who already possess a background in marketing, advertising, illustration, graphic design or the visual arts in the finer points of using those skills to make a full time living. Topics covered will include the successful delivery of clients ideas, messages and concepts through illustration as well as how to solve the problems related to communicating specific ideas without words.
This course will also make distinctions between illustration and the fine arts, and what that means for the artist hoping to make a living from their work. We'll discuss how one might professionally communicate with an art director about their work, as well as how to effectively promote oneself and if everything goes well, draft a contract.
Students are expected to have a background in advertising, graphic design or fine arts , either academic or self-taught, in order to maximize the potential of the course. Students also must put time aside to do their homework, which is not optional. This course is taught by using a variety of instructional techniques, including weekly homework/projects, critique on the wall, lecture and guest speakers.
