We understand our lives and history through narratives. In the computer age, a database provides frames of understanding of the physical and social as a parallel way of organizing human experience - a database appears to the user as a collection of information to view, navigate and search, regardless of how it is organized.

It goes without saying that any interactive communication tool needs to look good and be error free, this is the bare minimum.

Appropriating the tools and techniques of blogging, in this part of the workshop each student will develop a an interface not only to promote and showcase their media work, but also to create an archive of ideas and concepts, writings, journals and research, as well as a space for dialog and social activities…

In this part of the workshop students will learn the technical aspects of how to produce, upload, and host and promote blogs as well as how to design basic web sites with Adobe Lightroom and Dreamweaver. This section will cover basic CSS, and following the look and feel of their book layouts students will learn how to incorporate their media work, as well as identity and brand design.

We will examine art & photography web sites and blogs that have successfully utilized this technology and discuss concept and ideas for student’s individual projects.

In this Intensive, you will learn all of the basics of the application including the drawing and reshaping tools, combining objects, fill and stroke, applying color, and adding type. Students may scan black and white drawings or import photographs to be enhanced in Illustrator. The class will also explore different ways to prepare files for printing and the difference between print and screen resolution, as well as converting bitmaps to vector artwork, which can be blown up without losing resolution.

This hands-on, project-based workshop is ideal for those wishing to take their video work to the next level, and is aimed at artists with beginning or intermediate experience with video systems. Problems solved, questions answered, video mastered! Participants will broaden and deepen their practical and theoretical knowledge of video through the development of existing or new projects. Topics will include the ins-and-outs of video installation, hardware- and software-based systems for display, compression/conversion, and dynamic (live) control systems.

Specific technologies and techniques explored include compression and conversion (ffmpegX, Compressor, types of video: DV, HDV, etc) as well as hardware systems for display. We'll cover general signal routing, sync'd DVD players, cameras, routers, distribution amplifiers, types of cables, the whole thing. We'll talk about the nuts and bolts of installation - choosing projectors, keystoning, color matching, spanning multiple screens - and how to control them - MIDI, OSC, remote administration, overview of sensor technologies. For the slightly more adventurous, we'll also probably touch upon video software Jitter and Quartz Composer.

Students are encouraged to come to class with a project in mind, but there will be plenty of material and tricks to try out that we're sure you'll be inspired. This class will conclude with a small group show at 3rd Ward.
