Special opportunity: Nicaragua Photography Expedition

3rd Ward instructor Beb Reynol is organizing an educational photography expedition to Nicaragua!
Probably the best kept secret in Latin America, Nicaragua is a unique destination where you become an observer. Into the footprints of Spanish colonial past and cobbled stone streets, explore a changing world with the creative intent to develop your personal style of documentary photography.
While we discuss ways to approach and photograph people and places, examine cross-cultural issues and critic each other’s work based on regular assignments, this photography expedition engages each participants to communicate the cultural and social landscape of Nicaragua. Each day will take us to new environments and new challenges if not inspirational and will equip us with a unique experience to deliver a visual narrative.
The cultural and historical background of Granada and Leon present the ultimate environment to expand our awareness of our surroundings and communicate a sense of a place. Nicaragua has long ago turned the page on its revolution of the Sandinistas and the war against the Contras, and magically managed to preserve most of its numerous Spanish colonial architecture and may make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. While we venture into colored streets and capture scenes from a lively market, we will also experience the behind-the-scenes of a community and heighten our visual skills.
Along the way, we will explore las isletas de Granada, an archipelago of over 300 small-scattered islands of volcanic origin located on Lake Nicaragua. The islets are an ecological destination with outstanding vistas over the huge Mombacho Volcano arise right next to the lake. From different lookouts you will be able to admire the immensity of Lake Nicaragua.
The expedition is an opportunity to become a global advocate and make your travel experience an educational tour while capturing images of the nearly unexploited Nicaragua’s Central Highland on the Area Protegida Miraflor. Within the backdrop of lush mountains and remote landscape of spectacular and diverse biodiversity, local farmers formed small agricultural co-operatives for a more sustainable livelihoods, compatible with the maintenance and improvement of the environment. Travel acrros rugged terrain and ride on horseback to capture a unique landscape and connect with local farmers while spending the night at a local homestead.
Through lectures, each participant is exposed to contemporary photographers, whose works demonstrate different and creative ways to approach and deliver a photo story. The workshop is designed for digital photography to enable all students to share their work and receive feedbacks for immediate improvement.
