Mold Making Intensive
Over three sessions, students will learn the basics of mold-making through hands-on exposure to a variety of materials and techniques. Mold-making styles will be introduced in this intensive that are simple to accomplish without sacrificing the integrity of a model's surface detail. Students will learn processes that require no specialized equipment and can be replicated in a personal studio.
Many of the materials covered are non-toxic and produce little or no harmful vapors, making them easy to use in a private studio. Students will gain insight into how these materials work together in order to take their projects from model to mold to cast object. Examples of mold-making materials we will use include plaster, AquaResin (a cellulose-based resin) and pourable and brushable silicones.
Students should bring at least 3 small items to be replicated, about the size of an orange. Examples might include a doorknob, a clay model or one's own hand. Avoid objects with long thin parts or complex geometries. All mold making tools and supplies will be provided for by 3rd Ward.
Instructor: Corrie Van Sice is an interdisciplinary artist currently studying creative technologies at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program. She has formal training and professional arts fabrication experience in mold-making, sculpture, and interactive electronics. In her own studio, Corrie attempts to integrate contemporary fabrication techniques, from hand-built sculpture to 3D printing, with a responsible approach to materials. Her research and artworks are regularly posted to her blog.
