Introduction to Oil Painting: Materials & Techniques
This class will give student a concise overview of painting with oil pigments, one of the oldest and most versitile art media. As it is an introductory class no prior knowledge of oils is necessary but an understanding of basic art terms will be helpful.
The 1st session will go over the selection and preparation of grounds (painting surfaces) where ctudents will learn how to stretch, gesso and tone a canvas.
Additionally, students will learned about oil pigments and oil painting mediums both classic and new.
In the 2nd session the instructor will describe and demonstrate techniques employed in pigment application to achieve different effects. The focus will be on traditional methods but will include their more contemporary inturpratations in modern art.
The 3rd and 4th sessions will be studio time where students get to practice and paint on the canvas they stretched in the style that appeals to them most.
Provided materials:
*Two 8" and two 10" lightweight stretcher bars.
*2 sq. feet of 10 oz raw canvas.
*Gesso.
*Gamblin galkyd (fast drying medium).
*Turpenoid.
*Pallet paper.
Please bring:
*3 empty jar, one with a lid
(recycled glass or plastic or veggie cans prefered).
*8 basic oil pigments, student grade small tubes will do.
*Size 4 & 8 bristle Filbert brushes and size 1 synthetic round brush.
*Rags or an old towel.
