Intro to Dyeing
Dyeing fabric and clothing is something you can do at home, and it can be a lot more sophisticated than your familiar tie-dyeing experience!
The first class we will have a tinctorial reviewing some of the more scientific information about dyeing. We'll go over natural and synthetic dyes, fabrics and many different methods that you can practice on your own. Then we'll heat up the hot plates and begin with dip dyeing, painting with bleach, and resist dyeing. Bring in any fabric you want to dye, from clothing to home decor or just yardage. Make sure to bring both white fabrics as well as black or colored fabrics! We'll also provide some muslin for your experiments.
In the second class we will be learning about over-dyeing as well as Shibori, a traditional dye method in Japan. You can come in with a project you had in mind and we can work on it together during class. You will walk away with a lot of knowledge about dyeing and a few new dyed pieces for your closet or your home!
