How to Make Crappy Stuff Awesome
In this course, students will learn the basic concepts for creating furniture and other useful objects out of recycled and found materials for little or no investment. Give new life to a boring Ikea cabinet, fix a hand-me-down nightstand, or turn a bus window you found on the street into a coffee table. One part furniture rehab and one part design, this class will focus on the techniques needed to turn crappy stuff into something you love.
Students should bring one or two items to the first class, which will be reviewed in detail by the group and/or one-on-one consultations with the instructor. Students are also welcome to bring in their own specialty tools or supplies if they have a specific direction or need (glass drawer pulls, antique hinges, etching solution, etc.).
Students will learn both specific techniques and also how to approach a design problem, so they will be able to replicate the process on their own. Techniques covered will include using power hand tools, basic electrical wiring, painting and finishing. Students will have access to a full wood shop, a wide range of power tools, a spray booth, and a sewing machine.
