Furniture Design & Construction

This is a course for the furniture designer/woodworker who feels comfortable enough in the shop to want to flex their muscles a bit. Each student will arrive at our first session with a drawing, however rudimentary or well developed, and we will, as a class, look at them with an eye toward execution. All of us will benefit from the analysis of each project in the light of materials, techniques, skill and feasibility of completion within the 8 week run of the course.
It is one thing to conceive of a piece of furniture, it is another thing entirely to tighten that concept into a production event with a definite finish line. Each student will work, together with the instructor, to tailor their project, and subsequently their process, to the requirements of a virtual client and a real world schedule. By end of the second meeting, each project will have evolved to the point where we can arrive at a bill of materials and place orders, so that at our third meeting we will begin cutting wood.
The cost of each individual project will clearly vary; there are beautiful domestic hardwoods that allow one to build a dining table for $300.00, or exotic species that will quadruple the expense. Students will be given advice regarding materials, appropriate to both the piece itself and the skill level of the artisan. Enrollment comes with a 12-day shop pass (a $1200 value!) so that students may work on their projects outside of class time.
Prerequisite: Intro to Woodworking, Furniture Design 1 or Instructor's Permmision.
