Alternative Materials Challenge
As a metalsmith coming from a painting background, I was always curious about alternative materials and how to combine them with metal work. Using cold joining techniques like riveting, bezel setting, non-vulcanized mould-making and castable plastics, I was able to work with nearly any material I wanted, from hair to undersea creatures to flocking to food.
If you're interested in working with a material but aren't sure how it could possibly be made wearable, this class is for you. We'll cover the basic cold joining techniques mentioned above, plus helpful ideas for sealing materials and information on what is and is not safe to wear against the skin. Think of this class as Iron Chef—each student will bring an alternative material or found object, an ingredient, if you will, and together we will find a way to make it into jewelry.
