3D Design and Printing with Makerbot

Learn to Print real 3D Objects with the Makerbot table top 3D Printer. There may not be flying cars, but we do have friendly and affordable 3D printing at our fingertips!  Great for: artists, designers, craftsmen, inventors and technophiles! Applications include: prototyping/CAD, metal casting, architecture, education, geos-patial, health care, entertainment, retail or just making the lost part for your Ikea shelf.  The Makerbot 3D printer is made here in Brooklyn by Makerbot Industries.  There is a growing community of users and an online shared repository of existing designs just waiting for you to print from.  Find out how to take your designs from virtual representations to material prototypes and design objects.  Join our class and the community of makers who print what they want and need.  3D printing is no longer out of reach. Become an early adopter and taste the future... today!

In the first session we'll take a big picture look at the world of 3D printing. Where did it come from and where is it going? More importantly where do YOU go with it? There are a few different design programs you can use, and based on your ambitions, you'll be directed to the best tools for your work. Over the next two sessions, you'll refine a design and learn how to translate it into plastic.

Expect to do some of the design work between class sessions.  There is not enough time for everyone to print during class. Students will schedule time with the instructor to print their design.  You will be responsible for knowing the work-flow and monitoring your print.   Each student will have the opportunity to print one object.  Approximate Size 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches x 5 inches.  Previous experience with SketchUp, Blender or other 3D design programs is a plus, but not required.
